What is Plastic Surgery?

The term Plastic Surgery originated from the Greek word plastikos, which means to mold. Although primitive plastic surgery techniques have been uncovered as far back as the time of the ancient Egyptian civilization, modern plastic surgery owes its dedication as a specialty to the reconstructive needs of disfigured soldiers during the wars of the twentieth century.

The prevalence of disfiguring injuries sustained by the young soldiers of the British and American military during World War I called attention to the lack of skills of the medical community to meet the needs of these men. After the immediate and pressing need for post-war reconstruction, the doctors who had honed their plastic surgery skills on the soldiers of the war realized that their specialty could provide a host of services to other individuals as well.

Present day plastic surgery, although it continues to provide important reconstructive services for those who are in need of them, is primarily a form of bodily alteration in one form or another. Some individuals are looking to enhance their appearance and others are seeking to correct a cosmetic flaw. Still, thousands of plastic surgeons are correcting cleft palates, reconstructing breasts after a mastectomy, and creating new faces for individuals who have experienced a disfiguring accident.

Although a variety of materials are used in plastic or reconstructive surgery, the term "plastic" often leads people to assume that actual plastic is used. As discussed, the term refers to the molding of the body and not to the materials used to perform such molding. Additionally, modern day plastic surgeons prefer to use "natural" reconstructive materials whenever possible. By natural, one means that the source of reconstructive material is most likely to be biological, meaning of human or animal origin.

The plastic surgeon's job is important in that they offer a new and hopeful self-image to individuals who have dealt with a defect, real or perceived, for any period of time. People who were born with a visible facial birthmark can take advantage of laser procedures to minimize, or even eliminate, the source of their discomfort. Those who have been victims of burn scarring can now benefit from smoother skin. And individuals who have sustained feature altering accidents can thank the plastic surgeon and his or her skills for a new lease on life.

Cosmetic surgery is that which deals with the side of plastic surgery that is sought because of a person's dissatisfaction with one or more aspects of his or her body. This type of surgery is generally considered elective by insurance companies, but remains highly important to the individual who seeks to improve or change their body image. Cosmetic procedures can be either minimal or extremely invasive, but they are all backed by the science that begun with the skills of the ancient practitioners and honed on the battlefields of Europe.

Breast Lift

Introduction:

Breast lift is designed to improve breast ptosis (droop). This surgery may or may not be
performed with breast augmentation (placement or implant). It is also done to increase
volume and improve breast shape.

Reasons for undergoing a breast lift:

1. Some of the candidates have breasts that are

pendulous and for a satisfactory size.

2. Breast that lack substance or firmness

3. Nipples and areolas that point downwards,
especially if they are positioned below the breast crease.

4. Loss of elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy and
breast feeding affect the shape and firmness of the breasts.

Breasts that are large and heavy can be lifted but the results may not
be as long lasting as when it is done on smaller breasts. A breast lift
can be performed at any age. But one has to wait until breast
development has stopped. Pregnancy and breast-feeding may have
significant effect on the breasts; surgery will not affect your ability
to breast-feed. This should be discussed with your surgeon.

Your personal consultation:

During your personal consultation on breast lift, you will be asked about your
desired breast shape and size. Your plastic surgeon will ask you how your nipples
and areolas will be repositioned. Mention any improvement
to be seen in your breast.

Evaluation by plastic surgeon:
Plastic surgeon will examine your breasts, takes measurements
conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments received, previous
surgeries including breast biopsies and medications that you take. Your
complete medical history should be provided. If at all there was any
weight loss, your weight should be stabilized before the surgery.

Risks involved:

There are always risks involved in surgery. So it is same here in
breast lift surgery. Significant complications from breast lifts
are infrequent. Thousands of women go through surgery without
experiencing major problems and are pleased with the results.
Following a breast lift surgery, sometimes the breasts may not be
perfectly symmetrical or the nipple may vary slightly. Minor
adjustments can be made at a later time. Permanent loss of sensation in
the nipple or areas of breast skin may occur rarely. Revisional surgery
may be helpful where incisions have not healed poorly.

Surgical procedure:

Full breast lift:

This procedure involves an incision across the base of the breast as
well as incisions around the areola and an incision between the areola
and the base of the breast. Maximal correction of the breast shape is
possible with this but at the cost of more scarring.

Modified breast lift:

This procedure uses a step known as Benelli breast lift. A popular form
of this is known for only an incision around the areola. Less scarring
comes with less correction of the breasts shape. Benelli procedures
are frequently performed within the breast augmentation. But this
procedure is criticized because of the tendency to reduce projection of
the breast.

There are some realities which cannot be escaped. The aging breast
tissue may not allow lasting correction to overcome surgical
correction.
